Selection of steel materials for industrial machinery and plant components operating at 300 to 450℃.

You can't choose based solely on room temperature strength. Consider the material taking into account high-temperature softening, structural changes, and usage time.

In heating equipment and heat treatment facilities, as well as in industrial machinery that handles hot materials, the temperature of steel can reach around 300 to 450°C. In this temperature range, the strength of ordinary steel significantly decreases, and material changes due to prolonged exposure cannot be ignored. We will compare carbon steel, alloy steel, and high-strength steel based on the actual steel temperature and load conditions. At around 300 to 450°C, materials containing Cr and Mo may be advantageous in suppressing high-temperature softening. Candidates include SB450M, SB480M, SCM series steels, and specially designed high-strength steels, but even within the same strength class, high-temperature performance can vary. It is essential to check the atmosphere, oxidation, stress, operating time, and number of heating and cooling cycles, and to select materials based on manufacturer data and applicable standards.
